Rachel Zhang

2010 Recipient of the Leacross Foundation Biomedical Engineering Endowment

University of Ottawa Heart Institute

As a means of combining her love for biology and mathematics, Rachel embarked to undertake studies in Biomedical Engineering and is currently pursing her Masters in Clinical Engineering at the University of Toronto. She is actively involved both on campus and in the community through volunteering in fellowship services, a Saturday Mentorship Program as well as the creation of a Chinese Engineering Culture club.

Some of her previous research work includes using rehabilitation engineering and music therapy to help children with advanced and multiple disabilities learn about contingency awareness, developing fast methods to translate microarray bone cancer research in addition to human factors in workflow (chemotherapy nursing).

Throughout her internship at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Rachel applied her knowledge towards updating the Biomedical Engineering asset management database as well as improving the reprocessing process for transeoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) probes.

The Biomedical Engineering Internship Program was made possible through the generosity of the Leacross Foundation Endowment for Biomedical Engineering.
